Making Your Community “Home”

Screen Shot 2013-09-11 at 9.57.14 PMThe satisfaction of being a homeowner, doesn’t end with the home itself. How you interact with your neighbors, and within your community are important as well. While it isn’t necessary, or plausible,  for you to be best friends with each and every person in your community; it’s nice to be able to call them by name and know that you or your children can reach out to them in the case of an emergency.

There are several ways that you can work towards building that relationship within your community:

Don’t be afraid to get out there with the kids!

Encourage your children to interact with the kids in your neighborhood, and don’t be afraid to join in on the fun! Plan a sports match at your home, or a game night! Not only will this help you to know who your children are hanging around, it also opens the gates for you to meet their parents as well.

Learn the local spots

Keep in mind the phrase “When in Rome, do as the Romans”. Find out the local hangouts for your community or neighborhood, and make a point to visit. This could be anything from the neighborhood farmer’s market, group activities at the local recreation center or library, or even a local barbershop.  Chances are, your experience at one place will lead to suggestions on more new places to visit.

Don’t be a stranger!

Many of us are guilty of falling into the trap of just “minding our own business” nowadays. You may be worried about coming off as pushy or annoying by trying to hard to interact with neighbors. Bonding with your neighbors, however, does not mean you need to stand around for hours sharing your innermost secrets. Try, instead, to just push a little farther than friendly. If you see your neighbors outside, don’t be afraid to go out front and say allow or ask them about their day. These smaller gestures can often lead to lifelong friendships, and even when they don’t, they make for a great sense of community satisfaction nevertheless.
